Philia

φιλία : friendship – “It is hard for us to understand the political relevance of friendship. When, for example, we read in Aristotle that philia, friendship among citizens, is one of the fundamental requirements for the well-being of the City, we tend to think that he was speaking of no more than the absence of factions and civil war within it. But for the Greeks the essence of friendship consisted in discourse. They held that only the constant interchange of talk united citizens in a polis. In discourse the political importance of friendship, and the humanness peculiar to it, were made manifest. This converse (in contrast to the intimate talk in which individuals speak about themselves), permeated though it may be by pleasure in the friend’s presence, is concerned with the common world, which remains ‘inhuman’ in a very literal sense unless it is constantly talked about by human beings.” [Hannah Arendt, Men in Dark Times]

THE DIRECTOR AS CURATOR: Remembering Pierre Audi (1957-2025)

I wouldn’t first like to remember Pierre Audi as a visionary or a leader, despite all the works and collaborations he has brought into being. To me he was first and foremost a craftsman of modernism. You don’t often hear those words together in a field where a stage director can seemingly only be either…

LOUANGE: ERIIKKA MAALISMAA (1980-2024)

“In theatres these days, they organize activist events where people can talk about, for example, the ecological catastrophe or the Palestinian genocide. I wish I could somehow understand why there is no room for any of that in musical venues and opera houses, but I guess I simply cannot. Or maybe I don’t want to…

Bill Viola BEHIND THE SCREEN OF ISIS

Upon hearing of his passing on July 12, 2024. I once asked Bill Viola, after a performance of the Peter Sellars production of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE featuring his video, which I had by then seen a dozen of times with different casts and conductors, if he had preferences in musical interpretation – how his work…

COMPOSING ON THIN ICE – about the music of Juha T. Koskinen

Juha T. Koskinen (*1972), a Finnish man and a European composer, has created a deeply singular body of work over the past three decades. As he is celebrating an important anniversary year, a comprehensive approach to his music is oddly lacking: this will be an attempt at an overview, resulting from the ten years of…

In the lasting company of PETER BROOK

Written in the wake of Peter Brook’s passing on July 2, 2022. Henri Bergson famously stated that “Every philosopher has two philosophies, his own and Spinoza’s.” Because when reading Spinoza, “one feels with utmost clarity that this is precisely the altitude at which a philosopher should stand, that this is the atmosphere where a philosopher can…

Graham Vick OUT OF THE GATES OF HISTORY

I am shocked to read that Graham Vick, the pioneering opera director, has passed, at the young age of 67, from Covid-related complications. Since the creation of the Birmingham Opera Company in 1987, he was an inspiration to all of us who think that the ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ must not choose between bold artistic stands and outreach…

RESONATING WITH THE UNIVERSE

Liner notes for the CD Circle Map, Graal Théâtre & other works by Kaija Saariaho (composer), Clément Mao-Takacs (conductor), Peter Herresthal (soloist) and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, published by BIS records. A strong object of fascination in modern mathematics is the study of dynamical systems, that allows us to formalize and predict complex phenomena, and…
